OMEP is an international, non-governmental and non-profit organisation concerned with all aspects of early childhood education and care (ECEC).

OMEP defends and promotes the rights of the child to education and care worldwide and supports activities which improve accessibility to high quality education and care.

OMEP is currently established in over 60 countries and is represented at meetings of UNESCO, UNICEF, and other international organisations with similar aims.

WORKING for CHILDREN WORLDWIDE - ACTIVITIES of OMEP

 

• Promotes study and research related to ECEC;

• Organises international and regional conferences and symposia;

• Disseminates information about ECEC all over the world through the publication of the International Journal of Early Childhood;

• Encourages the training of personnel for ECEC;

• Encourages family education in connection with ECEC.

The Organisation Mondiale pour l’Education Préscolaire (OMEP) is an international, non governmental and non profit-making organisation dedicated to all aspects of early childhood education and care (ECEC). OMEP, founded in 1948 in Prague, was established in order to advance the interests and overall well-being of children in all parts of the world, regardless of race, sex, religion, national or social origin. It is empowered by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child of November 20, 1989. It is specifically aimed at advancing early childhood education and care in accordance with articles 28-30 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

OMEP International congresses and conferences

 

The second World Assembly, in 1949, drew representatives from 33 countries, and the third, in 1950, was attended by observers from the major intergovernmental agencies with related interests: UNESCO, UNICEF, and WHO. Since then, World Assemblies of OMEP have been held in: Mexico City, 1952; Copenhagen, 1954; Athens, 1956; Brussels, 1958; Zagreb, 1960; London, 1962; Stockholm, 1964; Paris, 1966; Washington, DC, 1968; Bonn, 1971; Caracas, 1974; Warsaw, 1977; Quebec, 1980; Geneva, 1983; Jerusalem, 1986; London, 1989; Flagstaff, Arizona 1992; Yokohama, 1995; Copenhagen, 1998, Santiago, Chile in 2001, Melbourne, Australia, 2004, Havana, Cuba, 2005, Tromso, 2006, Mexico City ,2007, Quebéc, 2008, Lagos, 2009 and now Göteborg, 2010.

Aims and Means of Action

 

OMEP’s aims and objectives are to defend and promote the rights of the child with special emphasis on the right to education and care worldwide. To this end, OMEP shall help any undertaking which could promote access to quality early childhood education and care.

The means of action of OMEP are as follows:

(1) collecting and disseminating information and facilitating the understanding of the needs of early childhood worldwide,

(2) promoting study and research related to early childhood education and care,

(3) encouraging family education in connection with early childhood education and care,

(4) encouraging the training of personnel for early childhood education and care,

(5) organising international and regional conferences and symposia,

(6) facilitating direct links and personal contacts between all members by various media,

(7) establishing working relationship with other appropriate world organisations,

(8) encouraging the establishment of National Committees.
